Flinders Medical Centre (FMC) is the southern area’s largest hospital and provides medical services for people living in the southern metropolitan area of Adelaide.

Wellbeing Support

This program aims to integrate volunteers into hospital wards to support patient wellbeing. Volunteers will enhance the patient experience by offering companionship, engaging in friendly conversations, and providing reassurance and comfort. Their presence can also offer support to family members, creating a more welcoming environment for both patients and staff.

Days: Monday - Sunday

ICU (Intensive Care Unit)

ICU volunteers serve as the frontline of support when visitors arrive at the ICU, embodying a professional and compassionate approach.

Days: Monday - Sunday

Times: 9am - 1pm, 1pm - 4pm, 4pm - 8pm. 4 weeks training required.


ED (Emergency Department)

ED Volunteers play a crucial role in improving patient experience and supporting staff efficiency.

Days: Monday - Sunday

Times: 9am - 1pm, 1pm - 4pm, 4pm - 8pm. 4 weeks training required.

Guides

Coming to hospital as a consumer or visitor can be stressful and confusing. The Guide Team provides volunteer support to welcome, assist and help navigate consumers, their families, and visitors to the hospital.

Day: Monday – Friday

Times: 8.30am – 12.00 pm / 12.00pm - 3.30pm

Pet Therapy

Pet therapy, also known as animal-assisted therapy, aims to improve patients' emotional, mental, and physical well-being in a hospital setting. It helps reduce stress, anxiety, and feelings of loneliness while promoting relaxation and comfort. Interacting with therapy animals can also encourage social interaction, improve mood, and even contribute to better physical outcomes like lower blood pressure and improved recovery times.

Times: 9.30am - 11.30am pm /1pm - 3.00pm

Music Therapy

Music offers a range of benefits for hospital patients, including for patients with dementia or neurological conditions, music can trigger memories, enhance cognitive function, and improve communication. Music can elevate mood, combat feelings of depression, and foster a sense of well-being. Overall, music contributes to holistic patient care by supporting emotional, physical, and mental health.

If you play a musical instrument and can spare some time, then this is the role for you

Cancer Services

Provide emotional and practical assistance to individuals undergoing treatment by offering companionship, listening, providing comfort, helping with non-medical tasks.

Volunteers also assist families and caregivers, offering a reassuring presence and easing the emotional burden.

Times: 8.30am – 12.30 pm / 12.30pm - 3.30pm

Paediatrics

Volunteers in the paediatric ward provide support to young patients, their families, and hospital staff.

Their responsibilities typically include engaging children in play and recreational activities to reduce stress, offering companionship, assisting with non-medical tasks like reading or helping with arts and crafts, and supporting families by providing a comforting presence.

Times: 8.30am – 12.30 pm / 12.30pm - 3.30pm

Nurture Boxes

Nurture Boxes are given to patients, and their families/carers who are Palliative.

The items in these boxes have been carefully selected to provide nurture and support during a difficult time. Duties include putting the boxes together, monitoring donations of blankets etc.
